In this paper we explore the self-interest motive. Speculation concerning this motive has long been at the heart of several fields of study. The question before management scientists, as well as before all of those interested in the causes of human behavior, can be framed as follows: When self-interest is stripped away, is there any remaining basis for human motivation? While this debate has gone on for decades, scholars seem close to an answer, albeit perhaps a conditional one. That answer appears to be ‘yes’; there seem to be bases for human motivation beyond mere self-interest. Unfortunately, the necessary evidence is scattered throughout various specialty areas, and a full reckoning requires an interdisciplinary examination. With this in mind, we review ideas from economics, social psychology, organizational behavior, and philosophy Each of these disciplines has had its own dialogue about self interest, and each provides unique insights regarding this issue. Together they are like the pieces of a mosaic, individually telling us only a little, but when arranged together providing a clear picture. In keeping with previous work (e.g., Holley, 1999), we define an action as self-interested if it is undertaken for the sole purpose of achieving a personal benefit or benefits. These benefits may be tangible (e.g., money, a promotion) or intangible (e.g., community standing, group status). The key defining feature is the intended beneficiary of the action.
